J. David Lee was my first real boss, if we leave aside the moron at the Texaco station. At 17, I had no reason to be given as much opportunity as he gave me, eventually guiding me to the data processing clients that would fund my college career, but I’m thankful for it. He also introduced me to John D. MacDonald, the great American mystery writer. I think J. David wanted to BE Travis Mcgee, and why not?
I have read and re-read those 21 novels, and hadn’t gotten hooked, really hooked into another character quite so much until Brother Jay turned me on to Lee Child this summer. Curse you, Jay. And curses to Mr. Child for writing so slowly! Only 11 Reacher books? I’ll be done in another week!
Sophisticated literature they ain’t, but I can’t get enough.
